M51 (Whirlpool Galaxy)
M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy, is shown here at multiple wavelengths. The top image is an Einstein HRI image, the middle is a red emission hydrogen line photograph, and the bottom image is a blue light image with radio contours overlaid. The Einstein HRI image shows three distinct sources associated with the spiral arms, plus a stronger nucleus source. The red light image shows spiral arm structure and bright HII regions.
